Patrick Mulvey’s Bio

Patrick Mulvey’s clients choose him because he brings them three things: strategic clarity, organizational alignment, and execution management; and he has been doing it for 20 years.

“Clients usually have one of two problems; they are not confident that their strategy will get them where the want to go, or they are not confident that their team will.”

Educated (B.S. & M.Eng. From Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) and practiced as a Chemical Engineer, Patrick’s first 14 years were in process and product R&D of engineered materials at Gulf Oil, Air Products, General Electric Plastics, and AlliedSignal (now Honeywell).

“R&D was a perfect fit for my creativity and natural curiosity.  I was always trying to make innovation and scale-up processes more dependable.”

Advancing from process technology to product development to marketing, then business development, general management, strategy formulation and strategy execution were natural and logical progressions within Fortune 100 corporations, before starting his own consulting firm in 1995.

“Increasingly, people realize that they may have a strategy, but it is simply not happening.  They know something must change, yet are uncertain what it is.  Execution is something top tier companies like Honeywell and GE know how to do, but it is baked into the culture.  Bringing it to other organizations requires some special tools that people need.”

Patrick has been privileged to serve clients in over 30 diverse industries, from engineered materials, to aerospace, retail restaurants, nursing care, log home manufacture, ice cream, national security software development, and dozens of others.

“Strategy and planning its systematic implementation are not something executives do every day.  Ideally, you want to rent the kind of expert talent that does do it every day, and has a track record of being good at it.  Building a dependable future is not like building a back-yard deck.  It’s not a do-it-yourself project any more than cyber security would be.  You’re betting the life of the company here.”

Patrick is process and results oriented and helps clients achieve what seems perpetually just beyond their reach.  His approach to clarity, simplicity, and accountability enable clients to get results quickly.

“There is no reason to make things more complicated than they naturally are.  By ‘habitualizing’ certain techniques, we can make the complex easy.  Think about driving a car or even brain surgery.  They will always be complex, but standardizing things can render them almost unconscious competencies.  Top executives leverage this, making execution the norm.”
